Machine translation is more and more widespread in private life and in the business sector as well. However, these two fields of application should be distinctly separated:
While browsing websites, machine translation can be used for information gathering purposes, thus with some luck the most important facts can be extracted from a text. Nobody is responsible for the quality of these translations, so it is understandable that the content of these texts cannot be taken for granted.
While applying professional machine translation we create the rough translation of the given text and then with the help of appropriate language professionals (translators and proof-readers) the translation is post edited, and the most important factual and language mistakes are corrected.
The quality of this post-edited machine translation cannot be compared to that of translations produced by humans, but if the aim of the translated text is clear, this is an option you might want to consider.
